Hyphenation
Hyphenation should b e app l i ed o n l y i n the compound words t h a t a r e o rd i na r i l y hyphenated. For example, broken-hearted, spell-check. While the software application provides hyphenating options, ensure that the following are never divided:
The last word in a paragraph nor the last word on a page Proper names and titles Measurements, time, dates, and monetary units Abbreviations Words of one syllable.
Most software applications have a wrap text feature which allows words that would normally have been hyphenated to be automatically printed on another line if the programme detects that the word is unable to fit at the end of a line. Punctuation
The Bank uses the open punctuation format. Example:
Mr John Doe, instead of Mr. John Doe Dear Mr Doe, instead of Dear Mr. Doe - The symbol ‘%’ is used in tabulations only. In reports and other types of documents the word ‘per cent’ is spelled out. - The ampersand (&) can be used in the names of firms and companies but should not be used to replace ‘and’ in a sentence.
Example:
Fraites & Sons Ltd
Commas
Use the serial or Oxford comma before the final conjunction - "and" or "or" - in a series of three or more items. This reduces ambiguity when the final two items could be taken as one collective item. Example: “ The canteen sells a number of breakfast items: cornmeal porridge, oats, pancakes, bacon and eggs" compared to "The canteen sells a number of breakfast items: cornmeal porridge, oats, pancakes, bacon, and eggs."
