8.0 CURRENCY AND FIGURES 8.1
Words should be followed by the figures in parenthesis, e.g. Two hundred and fifty dollars ($250.00). 8.2 The amount in figures should not be divided at the end of a typing line. 8.3 Both the ‘$’ symbol and the ‘¢’ symbol are not necessary in a single money expression. It should be typed - $48.35. However, if reference is made only in the body of a document (e.g. 35¢) then figures should be spelt out (e.g. thirty-five cents). 8.4 Any sum comprising dollars only can be typed with or without the decimal point, e.g. $35.00 or $35. Style, however, should be consistent throughout the document. The comma should be used when expressing figures denoting thousands of dollars, e.g., $1,450. When typing figures in tabular form – hundreds, tens, units, etc. should all be aligned. To do this set a “dec. tab’ rather than a normal tab, e.g.
$1,450.96 321.00 $1,771.96
8.5 When typing figures in a document, the numbers one to ten (1-10) must be spelled out. It is optional to use either words or figures for numbers from eleven (11) up. 8.6 In text, use $100,000; $1 million; $2 billion (not $1m or $2bn).
